Actors Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, who star in Daredevil: Born Again as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, have revealed the plans—which were later scrapped—to show that Foggy Nelson was still alive and in the Kingpin’s custody in the season 1 finale of the Marvel series.
Before the creative shift, Daredevil: Born Again was set to have Foggy Nelson die off-screen. Neither he nor Karen Page were supposed to appear in the series, and the killer was to be revealed as one of the corrupt cops who would later join Mayor Fisk’s anti-vigilante task force. When Dario Scardapane took over as showrunner, Foggy’s death became a central part of the story, but since he had to work with elements already created by the previous creative team, he had Bullseye kill the lawyer and then revealed that Vanessa Fisk had ordered the murder.
In the comics, Foggy has died and come back to life on several occasions. However, the death that seemed most relevant to Daredevil: Born Again was the one where Foggy, stabbed after visiting Matt Murdock in prison, was secretly saved on the operating table and placed under FBI witness protection: for several months, everyone assumed he was dead, including Matt, until the plot twist that marked his return. And apparently, the first season of Daredevil: Born Again had something similar in mind…
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, in fact, Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio discussed Foggy’s resurrection. The actor playing Matt Murdock, who recently swore that Daredevil won’t appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, stated: “I’ll tell you what’s impressive. I remember there was a moment when they discussed the possibility of that happening. At the end of the first season, we were supposed to see Foggy in one of Kingpin’s cages. Unfortunately, that idea was scrapped because it was deemed unrealistic. The important thing about our series is that we try to keep it as realistic as possible. But I understand the fans’ desperate need, the search for a lifeline to convince us that he’s still alive,” he admitted, seemingly confirming that Foggy Nelson won’t rise from the dead in Daredevil: Born Again 2.
Vincent D’Onofrio added: “I’d just like to say—and this isn’t a lie—that I’m glad I wasn’t the one who killed Foggy. That’s all I can say.”
So Foggy won’t be coming back from the dead—at least not yet—but we know Elden Henson will return in the second season of Daredevil: while it’s not 100% confirmed, it will almost certainly be for a flashback scene. Daredevil: Born Again 2 premieres on Disney+ on March 25. Charlie Cox will also return soon as the voice of Daredevil for the second season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Additionally, the actor has already begun sharing the first details about the third season of Daredevil: Born Again, which is currently in production.
