This week, as rumored in recent days, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios released the first official trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, finally giving fans their first glimpse of Tom Holland’s highly anticipated new adventure in the MCU.
Now, as the subtitle ‘Brand New Day’ suggests, the fourth film in the franchise—the first directed by a new director, Destin Daniel Cretton, who replaces the creator of the ‘Home’ trilogy, Jon Watts—represents a sort of ‘ideal new narrative starting point’ for viewers, given that after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker’s status quo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has drastically changed. This does not mean, however, that there will be no connections to the rest of the saga…
For example, in addition to Mark Ruffalo’s appearance as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will also feature Jon Bernthal’s Punisher: anyone interested in learning more about this character has until July 31 to catch up on the second season of Marvel’s Daredevil, the three seasons of Marvel’s The Punisher, and, of course, the first season of Daredevil: Born Again; Additionally, the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day shows New York’s new mayor handing the keys to the city to Spider-Man… you might have recognized her, since she’s one of Mayor Wilson Fisk’s subordinates! So yes, we recommend you also watch the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, which will be released on Disney+ starting next week (we’ve seen a preview, but we can’t say anything more for now!).
Another connection to the Daredevil universe is the appearance of the Hand villains in the trailer: this criminal organization appears in Marvel’s Daredevil Season 2 and The Defenders, and it seems Peter Parker will face them for the first time in his upcoming adventure. We also recommend catching up on the animated TV series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man: although it’s set in the Multiverse and in an alternate reality to the MCU, it shares significant connections with the franchise’s main universe and will help you get a clearer picture of who the villains Scorpion and Tombstone are, as they’ll be central to Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Finally, stay tuned to Everyeye because this summer, ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the film The Punisher will be released on Disney+: it’s set between the events of Season 1 of Daredevil: Resurrection and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, so it will be essential viewing to enrich Frank Castle’s story in the MCU.
