HBO Max’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone has released its first trailer, revealing plot details, main characters, countless references to the books, and, most importantly, the dynamic trio’s mischief during their first year of school. With a Christmas release date, we’ll get 9 episodes where we can see more of J.K. Rowling’s work, though with some changes to the cast.
The Harry Potter reboot has its first trailer, and we’ll tell you all about it
The series stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, rounding out the dynamic trio that will accompany us on these adventures. Joining them, we saw John Lithgow in the role of Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, and—the first major visual change—Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. The castle looks immense and full of life, just as many of us remember from reading the pages of the book published in 1997.
The blend of the medieval with the occult and that quintessentially English touch that characterizes the franchise is what many fans were looking for in this first trailer—and, above all, to see how Dominic would portray Harry Potter. The Sorting Hat, the hallways of the most important school in the universe, Hogwarts, the forests, and even a brief glimpse of the Whomping Willow are details we were able to catch in the trailer’s few minutes, leaving you eager to see more. While there’s still some time until Christmas, we’ll get more previews that could give us a better look at the relationships between the characters, especially the complicated dynamic between our protagonist and Paapa Essideu’s character.
The rest of the top-tier cast
In the trailer, we also saw the Dursley family—Harry’s aunt and uncle brought to the small screen with Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, and the most obnoxious character from the early books, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley. All remain faithful to the book, as we see their violence and abuse toward the scrawny Potter.
Rounding out the lineup of teachers and supporting characters we’ll see more than once are antagonist Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. Gracie Cochrane plays the young man’s love interest, Ginny Weasley, who was also seen for a split second alongside her mother on the Hogwarts Express at Platform 9 3/4, Molly Weasley, played by Katherine Parkinson.
