The Pirates of the Caribbean fandom has been buzzing again after years of silence and endless waiting… “Is that finally going to happen?” to see Jack Sparrow return to the big screen. The rumours about a sixth installment are out there in full force right now, with some folks really, really hoping to see the old pirate get back to his old tricks again and others thinking “oh boy, here we go again, they’re gonna mess this one up”.
The Disney franchise, which kicked off way back in 2003 with The Curse of the Black Pearl, has had a lasting impact on the world of adventure films, and Johnny Depp’s sheer eccentricity and on-screen charisma have pretty much cemented him as the iconic heart and soul of the whole shebang. However, despite the fans’ love for the series, the sequels have had a mixed bag of a time – you know, some people thought Dead Man’s Chest and Salazar’s Revenge were absolute garbage and you can see why, while others have adored them. And although the films have only had a mixed reception at the box office, that hasn’t stopped them raking it in, with the previous five films mopping up a cool $4.5+ billion at the tills.
Getting the 6th one made has been a tougher sell than usual. So then the thing with Johnny Depp and Amber Heard slowed everything way down, and as a result Disney took a step back from all of it – But now that Depp’s career has seemingly gotten back on track again, with a lot of people starting to take notice of him all over again, then suddenly there’s old buzz going around that says the screenplay could now be given to one of the writers of 1917 – that is Krysty Wilson-Cairns, while at the same time Margot Robbie is rumoured to be ‘on board’ in some way, but we still want to know what that is all about. There are also whispers about Jack Sparrow’s son possibly playing a big role in the new film.
When all this was put to Jerry Bruckheimer – the guy who’s been in charge of all 5 of the films to date, his response was pretty non-committal – ” They’re getting close on one part of the project, that’s all I can say” …” – in typical Sparrow style. On Robbie’s rumoured involvement, he just shrugged and said, “You’re heading in the right direction. The team loves Margot “.
So right now we still have no idea what on earth this new film is going to be – sequel, reboot, or something completely different… who knows. What’s for certain is that Disney is taking things very, very slow with this one – like a very cautious tortoise taking things one step at a time. That’s because they know they’ve messed up a few other franchises that they thought they could revive, but in the end just didn’t pan out. So all we can do right now is sit tight, watch with bated breath and see what’s gonna happen next.
