It’s been a weekend marked by wildly fluctuating audience engagement, and in it all, Shahid Kapoor‘s O Romeo has managed a double-edged victory. This stylish romantic drama – co-starring Triptii Dimri – boasted the actor’s biggest theatrical opening since 2019’s Kabir Singh. It capitalised on the Valentine’s Day vibe, only to take a hit from the high-stakes India-Pakistan T20 World Cup match on Sunday.
The Weekend Breakdown: From Dull Start to Saturday Surge
O Romeo opened on Friday to a pretty mixed bag of critical reviews – and that was reflected in its morning box office numbers. However, as the romance of Valentine’s Day started to sweep the nation, the film began to pick up traction in urban multiplexes, raking in a respectable Rs 9 crore on its first day.
But the real shift in momentum happened on Saturday. Word seems to have got around about Bhardwaj’s visual flair & the on-screen chemistry between Kapoor and Dimri, which propelled the film into a massive 60% jump, bringing in Rs 14.50 crore. It looked like O Romeo was ready to take off and have a breakout weekend – until Sunday rolled around.
The “Sunday Slump”: Cricket Fever Takes Over
In the Indian market, there aren’t many events that can knock a film off track quite like an India-Pakistan cricket clash. And that’s exactly what happened on Sunday when the T20 World Cup showdown dominated the nation’s attention – viewers glued themselves to their TVs and phone screens, and footfalls in the cinema halls plummeted. Estimates put the film’s Sunday collection at roughly Rs 10 crore, which brought the opening weekend total to around Rs 33.50 crore.
A Career-Boost For Shahid Kapoor, Uncertainty For Producers
Career-wise, though, O Romeo is a significant win for Shahid Kapoor. It’s been six years since the pandemic & Kapoor has struggled to get a consistent theatrical run going; his last notable hit – Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya – managed a lifetime weekend best of Rs 26.52 crore. But O Romeo by a country mile has outdone that, setting a new yardstick for the actor in the post-lockdown era.
However, there’s a bit of a cloud over the celebrations – the film’s budget is reported to be a whopping Rs 130 crore. The director is Vishal Bhardwaj and the film’s been mounted on a pretty ambitious scale.
Can O Romeo Steer Its Way to Profitability?
With a weekend total of Rs 33 crore, the film now has a pretty tough road to profitability ahead. Even if it manages to hold up over the weekdays fairly well, analysts still predict the first-week total will be hovering around Rs48-50 crore. To break even at the box office, the film will need to get an incredibly surprising run in the second and third weeks – and given the crowded release schedule ahead, that’s going to be a tall order.
Even though digital and satellite rights sales would’ve mitigated a lot of the risks for the producers, the film’s “Hit” status right now is still pretty precarious. Everyone’s now keeping an eye on the “Monday Test” to see if the film can carry its momentum & keep getting a decent hold – both in terms of audience numbers and box office revenue.
