Well, there should be no lingering doubts in anyone’s mind on the current status of Sunny Deol as the biggest draw of the so called “mass” hero in India after today’s box office figures come to light. Straight off the back of Border 2, hitting the ₹300 crore mark in just its third week, Aamir Khan Productions has officially locked in August 13th, 2026, for the release of Lahore 1947. Taking the film out on the massive five-day Independence Day weekend is a truly masterstroke move & it looks like the box office calculations will add up in a big way. But there was more to the announcement made on February 9 th than just the purely financial implications, as social media buzzed & hummed with some really emotional vibes.
Aamir Khan, who is producing this project, revealed something pretty special during the announcement, & it hit the fans like a ton of bricks – the late Dharmendra actually had the chance to see a cut of the film before he sadly passed away in November 2025. “This was actually one of the last scripts Dharamji really loved,” Aamir said, & went on to reveal that the legendary actor had given his blessing on the movie – with that kind of seal of approval, the final product must have carried a lot for the cast & crew. For Sunny Deol, this film is more than just another Partition drama; it’s an opportunity for him to team up again with Rajkumar Santoshi, the man who really helped him come into his own with his iconic action movies like Ghayal and Damini.
The film isn’t a battlefield epic, though. Based on the play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamyai Ni, it actually takes the focus off the battlefield & puts it firmly on a Lucknowi family’s struggles as they try to migrate to Lahore, only to find a Hindu family is still squatting in their newly allotted haveli. It’s a human drama that manages to balance out the tension & politics with the return of Preity Zinta, in her first major on-screen role in nearly 8 years.
With a massive cast including Shabana Azmi, Mithun Chakraborty & Ali Fazal, as well as a top score from A.R. Rahman, this project has all the hallmarks of that big event, show-stopping cinema of the 90s. But while Sunny Deol is busy breaking records in Border 2, Lahore 1947 looks at the other side of his late-career resurgence. Sunny might still be smashing it at the box office with his Border 2, but Lahore 1947 wants to show people a more softly spoken, vulnerable side. But if the magic between Santoshi and Deol is still the same, we can expect that by August this year, Sunny Deol will have more than just most of the box office to call his own.
