The Reacher star let slip that his upcoming season of the show packs in 30 fight sequences – and he filmed those in Philadelphia once he’d wrapped up the production side of things. Ritchson says he’s really worried about “fight fatigue” – he’s not bragging about the sheer number of deaths.
Ritchson has explained in his promo for Playdate why he thinks today’s fight scenes often don’t quite hit the mark. “I watch my girlfriend watching Game of Thrones and I’m genuinely yawning, waiting for the swords to come out,” he confessed. “My mom wants to watch the battle scenes – but not while she’s waiting for the fight to be over and done.” He reckons that Season 4 should spend more time getting into the characters’ motivations and what makes them tick rather than just wowing us with fancy special effects – like they did with their adaptation of ‘Gone Tomorrow’ in Season 4 (since it’s when he gets to talk about his fatigue).
Season 4 needs to figure out how to keep its “bone-cruncher” reputation intact while making sure they use their source material to tell a compelling story. The show’s adaptation of Gone Tomorrow starts off as a real psychological mystery about a subway plot which just so happens to be the point at which Ritchson says he was at his most exhausted – and the production is working at an absolute breakneck pace – they managed to cram in a whopping 11 fights during their first month of shooting (which is just crazy for a show of this calibre).
Prime Video’s got plans to release their content in late summer 2026 – and that’s after the Neagley spinoff starring Maria Sten gets underway. The 30 fights are what drive the whole story development, according to Ritchson – so this is basically going to be the most intense season yet. If he’s right (or wrong), we might all be snoozing away with his wife by episode 4.
